What's going on with DA again?

Journal Entry: Sun May 17, 2009, 12:50 PM
I'm having troubles loading the page again. It started some 10 days ago, I barely ever can see anything but the text on the page - it is not usable at all, most of the days. I cannot browse through art, see deviations of the artists I watch, or see any other icons and thumbs. It's really frustrating...

:threaten:

Is it only me, or you are having troubles too?
Thanks!

I've bought a new camera!!! :))) Finally!!

Journal Entry: Tue May 5, 2009, 9:15 AM
Finally an upgrade
I've bought a new camera some 10 days ago. It's Canon 5D Mark II and I'm really delighted with it. Well, how wouldn't I be when it replaced 350D (Rebel XT).
Yep, it's quite a jump replacing 8.0 Mpx 1.6x body with the 20.1 Mpx full framer. The difference is really huge in both quality and operation, although it will eat my disk space very soon, cause the raw files are really big (I think a terrabyte disk will do it for some time, but....). :D

For a long time I intended to upgrade to a Canon 50D, but this camera was a really good opportunity as I've gotten it much cheaper than to go into a store and buy it. I couldn't miss it. ;)

Luckily, couple of months ago I've bought a 24-70 f2.8L lens, otherwise I'd be in a serious problem now, with an extra expense for a good lens. I still have Canon 100mm f2.8 macro and 50mm f1.8 lens left to work with, others I will sell... I'll miss my Sigma 10-20 though. :(

Anyhow, I'm still exploring all the possibilities, getting used to work with it, but I love it every day more and more!

I'm so happy about all of this, and I hope I'll justify the investment and make even better photos. :sun:

I changed my avatar :))

Journal Entry: Mon Apr 20, 2009, 2:54 PM
Finally :D :D

I've found a suitable photo to make one of it. I was getting tired of the butterfly avatar I've had.
Here is the new one:

:iconlidija-lolic:

Now I'm really happy, cause finally my avatar is - me.

I hope you like it :)

Vienna, here I come :))

Journal Entry: Wed Apr 8, 2009, 10:18 PM
I'm going to Vienna for the Easter holidays, with my friends, to visit my (twin) sister . I don't have much time to write, I have to pack my photo equipment as the departure is in an hour :D :D

So, my dear DA friends, see you and hear you next week!

Thank yous and some impressions from Italy

Journal Entry: Wed Mar 18, 2009, 4:10 PM
Those of you who follow my journals, know that I went skiing to Italy at the beginning of March. The place was Kronplatz in Italy, a very modern ski resort. I really had a good time - both skiing and with my friends I've been with. Also I have noticed three major things there:

First, I felt more like in Austria, than in Italy. Locals there are more Austrian than Italian mentality and majority of them speak German by default. Since it's the place near the border with Austria, people speak both German and Italian. But it felt more like being in Austria - music, radio stations, bars, shops, people...
Sometimes I could not decide which language to speak :D If someone greeted me in German, I'd speak German, and if they greeted me in Italian, then I would speak Italian. It was so funny and confusing at the same time. I was mixing everything :D :D  Anyway, it was a good trip to practice both of the languages ;)

Second thing is you have to be very careful there, cause there's a lot of stealing. Since it's a huge and very famous skiing resort, there are literally thousands of people there. You have to have eyes all around your head. :D
We had one jacket with car keys and all identifications missing, two pairs of skis and sticks missing and almost one walkie-talkie stolen (I've caught the guy :threaten:).

Third thing are communications. I don't know what is wrong with that country?! I've had really hard time buying a SIM card, but the real mission impossible was to find an internet cafe. Yes, you CAN find one, but then you have to use THEIR computers. Why? There was no single internet cafe where you could bring your laptop and use it online. WTF?
And even to use their computer, you have to show your ID or passport, they have it copied, they store you in the database and all of the other security stuff. Just to use a freakin' computer for a half an hour. Like I'll launch an atomic bomb from there.
Ok, I know it's a paranoid world these days, but here in Croatia you have a free wireless network in almost every cafe. You just get a network key and - voila!, you enjoy the benefits of the modern age. It's completely normal and free thing. And we don't have any missiles launched from here either :D :D
In Italy, it was a no-no. A guy in the internet caffe explained me that using your own computer in such place is forbidden. For crying out loud, it's the 21st century...
Could somebody of you Italian guys please explain me is that the right reason, and why? Thank you ;) .

***

About the photography thing, the weather in Italy was very bad for shooting. Constantly with clouds around the mountains (the ugly ones), light was very poor, the same throughout the day, the snow was half melted in the valley and it was raining for three days. So, I was very sad I could not shoot more, but the conditions were poor.

One more thing, since I had no time for DA lately, I want to thank everyone for supporting me since I had no time to thank each one of you separately. I hope the period of inactivity is behind me, since I have loads of photos to submit. Yes, I did not forget how to shoot... :D :D

Off to skiing vacation

Journal Entry: Fri Feb 27, 2009, 6:44 AM
I thought this winter will go without it, but I'm still going! This winter's destination will not be Austria as usual, but Kronplatz in Italy (Plan de Corona). Very famous and modern skiing resort in Alps, and I'm really looking forward to a week on the white slopes.

And of course, I hope to make some nice photos there, if the weather conditions will be ok.

So, behave yourselves, hugs 'n' kisses to all of you, and see you in a week!

:D :D

New journal look

Journal Entry: Thu Feb 19, 2009, 6:14 AM
I've been messing with the journal css a little. Since I'm not a web programmer, I have changed only basic stuff. All I wanted was to lose dull green background and default text color.
I like it different like this, and I will surely change some more details in the future :D :D
I hope you like it ;)

I cannot believe how fast time flies. It's been a year since I've joined this great community. Already?? Wow...
So, I guess it's time for a speech :D :D :D
:drumroll:

Anyway, I was a little bit sceptical at the beginning, cause I was a complete newbie in photography and I did not have many good photos to show (it is also a little less than a year that I've been into photography 'for real' :) ). But, your support, comments and advices have really helped me to improve and learn many new things and finally, to make better photos.

DA is huge, it takes a lot of time to browse through art, to get noticed, or to reply and thank all of you for comments, favs and nice words.
But, also there are some really excellent, both unknown and famous  photographers here, from whom I could learn a LOT about light, composition and technical details of photography, so I can apply them in my own photos, and develop my own style.

I've met many great people here, I've made a lot of friends and I wish to thank them all for supporting me through this year - I really appreciate it, and I promise I will do my best to become even better. :)

Thank you all!

On this last day of the year, we all have some wishes and plans for the coming year.
No matter what your wishes are, I wish they all come true to you. The good ones, of course :D :D
Have a good time tonight and, even just for a while, forget about all your troubles.

I wish you health, happiness, love and lots of good photos in 2009!!

Hi ya all,
I've turned on beta testing to see how the new profile page functions. It's really good idea to be able to customize it a little bit more than before, and it looks great! Now I'm little confused when I see new layout on some deviant's page, but I'll get used to it :)

I just wanted to say - good work!

So I have to say bye, bye to you all till October. :(

I have to finish my university thesis till 30th of September, so I'd better forget about DA and photography for just a little while.
Maybe I'll be lurking a little, but that's it...
NO! I MUST FORGET ABOUT CAMERA, PHOTOS AND DA!!

After this is over, if anyone needs help with Linux traffic control (QoS), I'll be an expert (just joking, of course) :D :D :D

Wish me luck!!

***Update:
I have an idea of what to do. I'll give to my sister my DA user name and password, and make her change the password. So I won't be able to log in anymore, till I'm done with the priorities.
Maybe it sounds crazy but it's the only way to keep me away from this place.
So I'll reply to all of you when all of this is finished.
Thanks for your support in advance. I appreciate it.

Now, these are called extreme measures!:rofl::rofl:
  • Listening to: my conscience
  • Reading: Linux Traffic Control :((
  • Watching: two monitors in front of me
  • Eating: ...shit. Cause I was lazy and irresponsible...
While I was driving back home today, the traffic was so slow I had a time to give it a thought... Typical Sunday, some time on the beach, visiting my parents, and then, on my way back home, I've made a 3 hours photo 'visit' to town Trogir. I've been shooting everything. I was happy with it. But one thing crossed my mind...

I can't wait to get home.

It's not always about the usual stuff: to show the world how you see the stuff, or to express yourself artistically, to see the world in your own way, it fulfills you, yadda, yadda, yadda... It's all bullshit sometimes to me. A little digression: we're all children more or less. We like surprises. We like big fat presents wrapped in shiny paper with the gold ribbon. Don't we?
If you're a painter, you see the stuff you paint. Half done, you see it half done; fully done, you see it immediately too. If you are a composer, you know every tone of your song... But with the photography - you have a surprise. You never know what you'll get...

To me, photos are sometimes like big fat presents wrapped in shiny paper with the gold ribbon. Just packed on my CF card. I can't wait to come home and 'unwrap' them all. And I never know what I'll see. But if I get an extraordinary one, even more than I've imagined, I'm happier than a child. And that's the whole point sometimes. Anticipation. Unwrapping. Maybe a present I've wanted for a long time.

Either you've messed things, or you've done them better than you've expected - you have to wait for a while to see it. Don't mind the LCD's on the cameras. Technically, you can know you did things right (at least histogram tells that) but you never know it at whole until you see it in full screen.

I just love surprises!! :D :D :D

Greetings people! After being inactive for some time, it's time to get back into track again. Summer activities were more interesting than being online lately, cause I managed to take few days off and go on a vacation. And I was internetless :D. Yippie!!
I've visited my favorite Croatian island - Vis, and came back with full CF cards, full of great memories, and burnt of the sun. Yes, I know it's not healthy, but it's inevitable.
:sun: :sun: :sun: :sun:

Vis is an island approximately 30 nautical miles away from the coast, famous for it's intact nature, crystal clear sea and lonely beaches. It was included into the list of top 10 paradise islands of the Mediterranean sea. For me, it's a getaway place where I forget about busy and stressful everyday life. Here is the maps.google.com/?ie=UTF8&ll=43… of the location.

Ok, I'll cut the promotion and get back to more important thing - photos. I really did that a lot and I'm happy for it, although it was hard to make interesting landscape photos on mostly clear sunny day/morning/evening, but there is always enough of other things to shoot. I'll submit some photos following days which I find most interesting.

I hope you've all been well and had a good time too :)

Kisses!

Is it ok to submit the repaired/enhanced/changed photo instead of the existing one in your gallery without notice?

By changing I don't mean photo manipulation or altering the image completely, only perhaps adding a contrast to a portion of a photo, enhancing curves or cloning away the spot or piece that bothers you (not half of the photo ;)), which you've realized will look better after editing.
When you resubmit a photo, there's a checkbox which says: "This edit is minor (your deviant watchers will not be notified)".
Which edit is minor?

Maybe these are stupid questions, but ok, I'm stupid... :D :D :D

Thanks.
It's summer time, and a season of flying creatures all around us. As you've noticed I'm submitting insect photos lately.
It's a real challenge to shoot them, and therefore a big fun for me.
These days, everywhere I go, I cannot help it but to walk all around looking for nice bugs willing to pose. :)
I know I'm boring to my friends, but they'll be fine :D

Since I'm shooting them with my Sigma 70-300 which has macro mode, but it's not such a good lens, photos are not as good as they should be. That lens is good only for static scenes with a lot of light. Not for the restless flying creatures.

I've begun to search for a nice Canon 100/2.8 macro lens. I'm bidding for one on the e-bay right now, so wish me luck. ;) I hope to become a proud owner of it and make even better, tack sharp bug photos.

Even if I buy a new lens from the US, it will still cost less than here in Croatia with all the shipping and customs costs.

I'll keep my fingers crossed for one more day.

Love ya all...

Lidija
"After countless months of effort, and then starting over and spending countless more months of effort, we are proud to announce deviantART Version 6, aka "Sleek!" This is truly the best version we've ever released, and we're very proud of it...", yadda, yadda, yadda...

That's really great. Yeah! I hate to criticize somebody's work and effort, but this morning my DA page woke up in new V6 looks. And it's not working!! I see only the contours of what it's supposed to look like. And even those contours took an eternity to load.
Am I in the middle of some experiment where I'm supposed to judge about how layout looks, not the content?

Messages don't load, photos don't load, journals don't load... is anything loaded yet? Nope.
I know I'm not the only one ranting about this today, but hey, last night it was ok.

And I want it working, not 'sleek!'. Anyway, I guess I just have to be patient, V6 is irreversible and here to stay.

So, DA administrators, I applaud to your effort and pride about new site, but if it is working like this in the morning, I don't want to think about how it will work in the evening rush hours.
Cheers!

Hi to all of you!
Thank you all for good wishes. Needless to say, I've had such a good time in Vienna . That city always amazes me and I enjoy coming back there each time. Those were three long and fulfilled days.
Unfortunately, I did not have much opportunity to shoot, as I wanted to spend as much time as possible with some dear people I don't have much time to be with, among all - my twin sister who lives there.
Although I planned to make a photo trip around the city or somewhere on the outskirts, I didn't go, but I hope next time will be better. But that doesn't mean I'll not submit a single photo from there, something is always left on a card anyway :D :D.

I've visited some interesting places though:

1. BODIES - world famous exhibition of a human anatomy, made of a real people's bodies. Scientists who prepared the exhibition used a special technique with polymers and some other chemistry to preserve the bodies and organs like they're alive. Really remarkable is with how much imagination they've set the exhibition, and how they managed to show every single muscle, nerve or blood vessel of the human body. You can even tell people's faces on some real sized exhibits and they are all Chinese - the bodies were donated from Chinese prisons. Here is the www.bodiestheexhibition.com/bo… of the exhibition's web site where you can read some more details. If you see it coming to your city, don't miss it. Stuff I've seen and facts I've learned there are a-m-a-z-i-n-g.

2. THE TUTANKHAMUN EXHIBITION - "At first I could see nothing, the hot air escaping from the chamber causing my candle flame to flicker, but presently, as my eyes grew accustomed to the light, details of the room within emerged slowly from the mist, strange animals, statues and gold - everywhere the glint of gold." - described the archaeologist Howard Carter his discovery of the Tutankhamun's tomb in 1922.
This is known as the greatest archaeological discovery in the history. And therefore I was honored to be able to see the treasure at the Ethnological Museum in Vienna. Really amazing stuff that guy Carter found in the tomb.
And again, I've learned some new facts about Egyptians and their crazy need to send their Pharaohs to eternal life well preserved and equipped ;) Here is also the www.tutankhamun-exhibition.co.… of the exhibition for all of you interested.

And the last, but not the least - European Championship finals on 29th of June. I assume that to those of you outside of Europe that does not mean anything special, but here it's always a big mess :) We went to see the game to the Fan zone. Not to forget, congratulations to Spain team for their victory over Germany.
I did not watch the game that much, as we were busy mingling with other fans from all over the world. As we were dressed in red and white squared t-shirts (the unmistakable detail of Croatian soccer team) there was no need to particularly introduce ourselves :D And the fun could begin... It was really an unforgettable party that lasted on Vienna streets till the morning. I can tell you, it's not fun to drive 8 hours back home, day after that madness and hectoliters of beer. But it was worth it...

That's all folks, I've written a small novel, but I could not make it any shorter with all those impressions.
Hugs and kisses to all of you and photos are coming soon...
Hi everyone,
I'll be away for few days so I'll catch up with the comments and everything as soon as I come back and make some time for DA.
I'm going to Vienna for a small and unplanned trip (I just loooove unplanned stuff :D) and I hope to be back with a bunch of nice photos. I haven't still submitted many photos I have prepared, nothing from yesterday's trip too, so I'll be flooding you with photos soon :)

Take care, and kisses to all of you!
Hya there everyone!
I was away for a while and I felt little awkward not being so much online. I hope you all are fine. :)
Had a lot of work to do, and evenings are now more reserved for garden parties with my friends as the weather is getting really nice (finally summer!). You know, barbecues and stuff :D :D
I'm stuffed with all sorts of meat (vegetarians, ignore this, but I cannot imagine carrot barbecue ), and it is not going to stop any time soon. :puke:
And of course, there's the ongoing European football championship... So I'm stuffed with the beer too (what's a good match without a beer huh?), which is not so good. :ahoy:

I have message box full of new journals, comments and favs, but I'll wait till tomorrow cause it's crowded now on DA servers.

Anyway, I need to hear your opinion/advice/pros/cons about one thing.
When you browse through someone's gallery on DA, do you like photos grouped into categories, such as Nature, Sunsets, People, Cars, etc...?
(I know it's more intuitive like that, but it takes clicking to see, I don't know, four photos in each category sometimes.)

Or do you like everything together in one gallery?

I'm thinking of maybe sorting my photos here (or maybe not), some time soon. But, I'd like to hear what you think of that. It is surely easier to browse categorized, but sometimes I'm lazy to click on each category in somebody's gallery and therefore I surely miss some of good work.
Thank you all!!
